I received an email supposedly from PayPal informing me of a $399USD bitcoin purchase that said “we have detected unauthorised activity on your account if this was not you please contact our helpline”. I had not made any such purchase, so naturally I panicked and phoned the helpline, before actually checking my PayPal account. A person from India replied from a number registered to the Ballarat region of Victoria, in my home state. I thought that was strange to start with and then he proceeded to ask me are you sitting in front of your computer, again I thought this was odd, I replied “no, I don’t have a computer I am on my mobile phone”. He then asked me is it an android or an iPhone, another odd and irrelevant question, I replied “an iPhone”. He then asked me to go to my App Store, which is when I immediately said “oh, no, no, no, this is a scam, sorry” and I immediately hung up. I have experienced this twice before with people calling me telling me my Amazon account has been compromised, telling me they can help retrieve funds. They ask you to download an app from the App Store and ask you to do everything they say, which results in them being able to hack into your phone and acquire all your personal details in order to rob you. I hung up on the Indian man because I knew his next directive was to download a specific app.
